Fall Mentoring Group

Interested in joining my mentoring group this fall?  Here are the details:

This 12-week journey involves a heavy commitment but promises to be some of the most rewarding days of your life.  During this time, you will: 

  1. Read through the entire New Testament, the first 12 chapters of Genesis, Exodus 20, and Psalm 119
  2. Read Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren ($10)
  3. Read Christian Worldview For Students by Brannon Howse ($10)
  4. Meet every week for 12 weeks for a session on Christian Worldview
  5. Fast 3 times during the 12 weeks
  6. Memorize 1-2 verses per week 

In order to foster personal and accountable relationships, the group size is limited to no more than eight students. The first eight students who respond and can commit to the group covenant will be accepted. 

If you would like to be a part of my mentoring group this fall, you must call our office at 678-494-2653 to inform Christine Boggs of your commitment.  The first meeting will be Monday, September 20th at 4pm. 

We look forward to one of the most fruitful semesters of your life!!

Mentoring Group Info

I’ve been meeting with a group of guys for the past two months and it’s been an absolute thrill for me. I’m convinced that significant spiritual relationships are critical for a student maintaining their faith after high school. I’m exploring the possibility of opening up a second group. 

Here are some of the details of the group:

1. We will meet every other Thursday at 4pm for approximately 16 weeks
2. We will read through the New Testament in 112 days
3. Our book study will be the New Testament
4. We will do a one night overnight retreat together
5. Other possibilities include: Church on the Street together, outside book reading, listen to one message a month
6. We will start Thursday, April 15th
7. The group will be limited to 8 guys

Note to Parents: If you are interested in your son being a part of this group, please note that I will not take guys that do not participate in discussions, complete the reading, or are apathetic about being there.

Twelve [A Vision for Mentoring Guys]

I recently received this “vision” statement from an adult in our ministry. He’s passionate about raising a generation of students and the following is his plan for mentoring a group of guys starting in January.  You can follow this guy and more of his vision on Twitter (@sidekickceo).

I will be meeting with a group of guys again in January as well and will be modifying this plan.  Feel free to use as well. Some of it you will have to contextualize in your setting (such as local mission trip, overnight retreat location).

TWELVE

Vision: A group of 8-12 High School guys (9th-11th) hanging out as with a mentor once a month to challenge each other to become more influential leaders and to awaken each other to potential never before realized. 

Mission: To make disciples who make disciples who make disciples . . .

Location: The Tillman’s Basement

STRATEGY: 

1. Monthly 3-hour meetings for 12 months that include the following:
a. Eat – Guy stuff like Chili, Burgers, Pizza, Wings, etc. with a different theme each month
b. Chill – Play video games, talk about the week, watch Sportscenter
c. Study – Live Like Kings curriculum studying the successes and failures of OT kings, ultimately magnifying Jesus as the only leadership figure whose approval of us has any value.

v. King Josiah
vi. King Hezekiah
vii. – xii. King Jesus

d. Interact – Discuss study, fighter verses, message of the month, talk about successes and failures from the past week and how we can improve on them.
e. Pray – Specifically for who we can impact for Christ, how we can serve the Football team & School, what God has planned for our futures, sin we are struggling with.

2. Daily Fighter Verses via Text or Twitter

3. Weekly Blog w/ Discussion at twelvefraternity.com

4. Message of the Month
I will pick out a message each month and provide it on CD for everyone at each meeting.

5. Two Books
Each group member will be responsible for reading two books throughout the process.

6. Two Local Mission Trips
a. Trip 1: Church on the Street – Purpose is to foster an awareness and love for the “least of these”
b. Trip 2: Upward Basketball in Clarkston – Purpose is to demonstrate that God’s calling on us for ministry is likely at the very heart of passions that may seem unrelated.

7. One Road Trip to Birmingham (The Basement)

8. One overnight retreat – Charlotte, NC
- Nascar Speedpark
- Whitewater Rafting
- Elevation Church

9. Quarterly One on One breakfast for personal advice and evaluation.

10. Final one on one evaluation and written expression of leader’s potential in Christ.

What Are Your Essentials For Interns?

Tonight our Minister in Residence, Jeremy Brummel, will start a two week series titled, “Are You in the Know?”  Jeremy has served with us now for a full year, and it’s going to be tough seeing him leave soon.  He’s mature, has a great understanding of student ministry, and has A+ iniatitive.  His humility and teachable spirit is genuine and essential for an intern! 

He’s been extremely easy to mentor and has modeled that this year to more guys than I can count.  He has helped us start a mentoring program, a new believers study, as well as a “Preacher Boys” class where 8 guys spent 10 weeks studying how to preach.

If I had an open position on our staff, he would be the person I would want to hire. 

We started our 1-2 year mentoring program for future Student Ministry leaders with this purpose: To help raise the next generation of student ministry leaders and place them in significant ministry positions.  We receive calls every month from churches looking for a student pastor and unfortunately we rarely have names and resumes to share.  The next generation of student ministry leaders will learn from someone.  We’ve got a long ways to go in learning ourselves, but we’re not using that as an excuse to pass on what we do know to those that are just behind us. 

Our dream is to one day partner with like-minded seminaries, colleges, and churches in a network of student ministry training and placement.  Time is of the essence and a generation is in the balance.  We have a sense of urgency for this generation and those who lead.

Following our pastor’s model of mentoring, we have established the following four principles for our 1-2 year training internship:

Education
We are committed to your personal growth as a Christian
We are committed to your ministry growth as a Youth Pastor
We are committed to your educational growth as a Learner

Mentoring
We are committed to personal mentoring
We are committed to practical mentoring by experience
We are committed to holistic local church mentoring

Experience
We are committed to providing real student ministry ministry experience
We are committed to real “succeed or fail” leadership responsibilities

Future Ministry Planning
We are committed to helping you develop in critical student ministry areas
We are committed to helping you understand training volunteers
We are committed to helping you formulate a strategic educational plan
We are committed to helping you begin to develop core values for your ministry
We are committed to helping you develop a ministry calendar
